The girl swam in the sea at Bribie Island, a popular national park and excursion destination near the capital of Queensland. She received severe bites in the attack, and despite swift medical action, the teenager's life could not be saved.

On January 2, a shark bit a 28-year-old surfer to death at Granites Beach in the state of South Australia. And on December 28, a 40-year-old spear fisherman was attacked at Keppel Bay Islands on the Great Barrier Reef, also with fatal outcome.

Sharks biting humans is not entirely uncommon in Australia, but so many fatalities in a short time are less frequent. Apart from the mentioned great white shark, bull sharks and tiger sharks are responsible for many of the attacks.
