The work began on Tuesday evening, and by Wednesday morning the results were visible in the canal at the Turbinen pumping station in central Malmö, as a stench spread over the area.
The canal has been blocked off with containment booms to prevent pollution from spreading throughout the canal system. Solid particles are being sucked up by a vacuum truck and taken to the Sjölunda treatment plant.
Malmö residents have been urged to reduce wastewater discharges while the work continues until Friday night and are advised against direct contact with the canal water.
