According to World Athletics, it concerns former employees who embezzled more than 1.5 million euros.
The International Association of Athletics Federations states that it has provided detailed information to authorities and the judiciary to support a criminal investigation.
The union says it terminated the contracts of a consultant and an employee and that another employee, who is accused of participating in the embezzlement, had already quit before everything was discovered.
International Association of Athletics Federations president Sebastian Coe says that they will use full force to investigate the embezzlement.
"Too many organizations sweep these things under the rug and terminate employment without information, giving perpetrators the opportunity to continue their criminality in other organizations. We are not like that," he says.
