The European battery initiative ACC is scrapping plans for two large battery factories in Italy and Germany, according to the Italian metalworkers' union UILM.

"ACC's management confirmed to us this morning what we have long feared: ACC's plans to build a gigafactory in Termoli have definitely been scrapped, and the same is true in Germany," the union said in a statement.

ACC, which is backed by Stellantis, the French energy giant TotalEnergies, and Mercedes-Benz, was a competitor to Northvolt and has been identified by the EU as important for reducing dependence on China.

The factories would have been located in Kaiserslautern and Termoli, respectively.
