Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a press conference that "everything indicates" it was a Russian missile that was detected in the country's airspace, reports TVP World.
But we want to be 100 percent sure what type of rocket it was and who fired it, he said.
According to Andrij Sybiha, it is a Kh-101 missile that is said to have been part of Russia's extensive overnight attack on Ukraine.
"This is yet another clear proof that it is urgent to strengthen Ukraine's air defence right now and that this constitutes a guarantee for the protection of the entire Euro-Atlantic community," Sybiha writes on X.
Don't want to escalate
Previously, several countries close to Russia and Ukraine have reported drones entering their airspace during attacks.
As both sides try to protect themselves with both air defence and electronic warfare against drones and cruise missiles, some missiles may end up where they are not supposed to, says Johan Norberg, military analyst at the Swedish National Defence Research Institute (FOI).
I think there is a great deal of concern about not escalating the situation unnecessarily, whether from the Russian or Polish side.
The violation "once again underlines that Russia's aggression is a threat to the security of all of Europe," writes EU Council President António Costa on X.
Sweden also condemns the events.
"Sweden condemns last night's new deadly Russian attacks on Ukraine and the completely unacceptable violation of Polish airspace. I am in contact with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk," says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) in a comment to TT.
Increased combat readiness
During the night, an "unidentified object" was detected in Polish airspace. Later, a probable impact site for that object was found in an uninhabited area near the community of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin province.
"To ensure the security of Polish airspace, the combat readiness of the air defence was increased," the military writes on X.
"At 03:40 an unidentified object was detected moving westward in Polish airspace."
The crater found in a field was ten metres wide, the Ministry of the Interior announced.
Police in the city of Lublin say an investigation is underway at the scene after emergency services deemed the area safe.
