According to UNICEF, one in 10, or more than 171 million students, had their education disrupted by extreme weather last year. This happened in 106 countries or territories. Girls are hardest hit when schools are damaged, classes are cancelled or education is moved online.
"Girls are at greater risk of dropping out when climate hazards disrupt or close schools," UNICEF said.
Damage to schools and sanitation facilities and lost family income are cited as reasons that may increase girls' responsibility for care and water collection.
According to UNICEF, around one billion children live in countries where there is a very high risk of climate and environmental disasters.
