According to the report, 13 million people were forced to flee their homes last year due to war and conflict. At the same time, over 14 million returned home, which is the main reason for the decline in the number of refugees.

Most returned to countries that are still characterized by conflict and insecurity, including Afghanistan, Congo, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine.

This decline is largely due to people being forced to return to the countries they fled from, without receiving the support or resources they need to rebuild their lives, Jan Egeland, Secretary-General of UNHCR, told the Norwegian news agency NTB.

Despite the decrease, the level is double what it was ten years ago. By the end of 2025, one in 70 people in the world was a refugee.
