Unemployment in France rose to 7.4 percent during the first quarter, up from 7.3 percent the previous quarter. The increase – which is expected to be followed by a continued upswing in the French recession – was in line with expectations.

The French economy is in a slump. Growth in the first quarter remained at 0.1 percent, due to decreased investments and weak consumption.

France's central bank, part of the ECB system, said earlier this week that it only sees weak growth during the current second quarter, the central bank expects unemployment to increase to 7.8 percent this year and stay there in the near term.
