The tough situation on the labor market is leaving clear marks on how many people are now receiving compensation from the unemployment insurance fund. During the first quarter, it was about a total of 176,000 people – an increase of 19 percent compared to the same period last year, according to new figures from Sweden's unemployment insurance funds.

"We can establish that unemployment is the highest in ten years, and almost at the same level as it was during the pandemic. In times of high unemployment, it is extra important to be a member of the unemployment insurance fund to feel secure in working life", says Tomas Eriksson, secretary-general of Sweden's unemployment insurance funds in a press release.

In Sweden, there are 24 different unemployment insurance funds and seven out of ten Swedes are members today.
