Israel's increasing measures to strengthen its control over the West Bank are being harshly criticized at the UN.

“We are witnessing a gradual de facto annexation of the West Bank,” said Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General, at a UN Security Council meeting, warning of a “dangerous expansion of Israeli rule in the occupied West Bank.”

The council meets on Wednesday, ahead of the first meeting of US President Donald Trump's so-called peace council on Thursday.

The meeting's chair, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, said that "We must prevent the destabilization of the West Bank and preserve the possibility of forming a Palestinian state."

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar defended his country, saying that "No other nation anywhere on earth has a stronger right to exist than we do, with our historical and documented right to the land of the Bible."
