UN warns 1 million children in Afghanistan face severe malnutrition and risk death

"If they don't receive treatment and if we don't act quickly, they risk dying," warns Unicef's Afghanistan director Tajudeen Oyewale at a press conference in Geneva.

The hardline, fundamentalist Taliban movement has been in power in Afghanistan for five years. Before taking power, the Taliban promised that women would have access to education, work and participation in public life in accordance with the principles of Islam - but this has not happened.

Millions of girls are now denied an education while poverty spreads.

In parallel, Afghanistan has been hit by several natural disasters - and several aid organizations have been forced to scale back their operations in the country.
