Doctors Without Borders and UN Urge Action on Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

Doctors Without Borders denounce the "intentional humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza, and the UN's António Guterres calls for unimpeded humanitarian access to the strip. The statements come after Israel blocked all humanitarian aid from entering the war-torn area for over ten weeks.

Doctors Without Borders states in a statement that "we are witnessing, in real-time, how conditions are being created for the extermination of Palestinian lives in Gaza", and calls on, among others, EU countries and the UN to act.

The UN Secretary-General Guterres reiterates his call for a ceasefire in Gaza, and earlier the UN chief for humanitarian affairs urged the Security Council to act to "prevent genocide" in Gaza.

"Appalling development"

What more evidence do you need? Will you take decisive action to prevent genocide and ensure respect for humanitarian law? asked Tom Fletcher, head of the UN's humanitarian coordination agency Ocha, before the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Or will you say that we did all we could.

International relief efforts, including by Ocha, have been the only international presence on the ground in Gaza, he emphasized.

They have seen and reported on the appalling development.

Fletcher, a seasoned British diplomat who took office as head of Ocha in November, underscored that in previous wars and conflicts, the UN had failed to speak out about the extent of human rights violations and the laws of war while they were ongoing.

"Will be too late"

Now the ICJ (International Court of Justice in The Hague) is considering whether genocide is taking place in Gaza. They will weigh the testimony we have shared. But it will be too late.

470,000 Gazans are now facing the highest risk level: 5, catastrophic risk of famine, assessed the UN-backed IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) in a new report published on Monday.

Demand that this comes to an end, said Fletcher to the Security Council.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says that the humanitarian situation inexcusable and calls on Israel to find ways "to end the conflict".
