The UN is suspending its work on the border between Afghanistan and Iran, citing restrictions on female personnel.

After the Taliban tightened restrictions on Afghan women, the UN announced that it was suspending its work at a border crossing between Afghanistan and Iran, according to AFP.

“The UN and humanitarian partners have today suspended operations at the Afghanistan-Iran border in Islam Qala, following the introduction of further restrictions that prevent female staff from the UN and partner organizations from working at the border,” said the organization’s Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan.

This year alone, almost two million Afghans have been forced out of Iran and, according to estimates, around 800,000 have crossed the border at Islam Qala.

The UN has described the situation in a camp on the site as very difficult.
