UN Security Council condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia in rare unanimity

The condemnation, in the form of a statement from French UN Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont, concerns the Iran-backed Houthi movement's attacks on civilian targets and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

The Islamist movement, which controls large parts of Yemen, has carried out several attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia while also mounting an offensive in Yemen and threatening to take control of the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait.

It is rare for the Security Council to agree on issues related to conflicts, as the five permanent members - Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom and France - are often on a collision course.
