UN Reports Over 250 Journalists Killed in Gaza Conflict

The war in Gaza is the deadliest conflict ever for journalists, says Irene Khan, freedom of expression expert affiliated with the UN.

At least 252 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023, according to the UN's latest figures, Khan says.

More journalists have been killed in Gaza than in both World Wars, the Vietnam War, the Yugoslav wars, and Afghanistan combined, says Khan.

She also makes a comparison with Ukraine, where 14 journalists have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in early 2022.

Khan, who is an independent expert affiliated with the UN Human Rights Council and who does not speak on behalf of the UN, accuses Israel of deliberately targeting journalists.

(They) are deliberately selected because of the work they do in the field to expose the atrocities, crimes, and genocide, says Khan.

The international community must stop Israel before all journalists in Gaza are silenced.

Israel has provided various explanations for the military's deadly attacks on journalists. In some cases, the attacks have been described as mistakes, and in other cases, the person attacked has been accused of being linked to the terrorist-stamped Hamas.
