The area is controlled by one of the city's largest armed groups, the SSA militia. Their leader Abdelghani al-Kikli was killed in the battles on May 12 this year.

In the excavation of a detention facility, ten charred bodies were discovered. An additional 67 bodies were found in refrigerators in two of the city's hospitals. Furthermore, the UN has information about another burial site at another SSA-controlled location.

"Our worst nightmare has come true, dozens of bodies have been found along with suspected torture devices and possible evidence of extrajudicial executions," says the UN's human rights chief Volker Türk in a statement.

The UN chief urges the country's authorities to seal off the area to preserve evidence and says that those responsible must be held accountable.
