Last year, more than 37,000 civilians died in these conflicts. One in four were women and girls, double the number in 2021, according to a UN report on women, peace and security released on Monday.

"More women and girls are affected by war than at any other time in decades. Yet military spending is rising while development aid is falling," said Sima Bahous, director of the UN agency, according to the press release.

Women are also virtually excluded from peace negotiations. According to the report, women made up only five percent of negotiators in 57 peace processes worldwide, a decrease of two percentage points compared with the previous year.
