The Vienna-based UN body announced on Wednesday that Iran is not cooperating in efforts to determine the status of its nuclear facilities. Twenty-three countries voted in favor of bringing the issue to the Security Council, three voted against and eight abstained.
Iran said in an initial reaction that the resolution “will not yield any results.”
This is the first time that Iran's secrecy surrounding nuclear facilities has been brought to the Security Council's table. The resolution is sponsored by the US, UK, France and Germany. Both China, which voted against the resolution, and Russia can veto it.
Several nuclear facilities have been damaged in the ongoing war between Iran and the United States. The West fears that Iran is trying to acquire nuclear weapons.
