The Vienna-based UN body announced on Wednesday that Iran is not cooperating in efforts to ascertain the status of its nuclear facilities. Twenty-three countries voted in favour of bringing the issue to the Security Council, three voted against and eight abstained.
China, which is part of the board, voted against the resolution.
It is the first time that Iran's secrecy surrounding nuclear energy facilities has been brought before the Security Council. The resolution is sponsored by the US, UK, France and Germany. Both China and Russia can veto a resolution targeting Tehran.
Several nuclear energy facilities have been damaged in the ongoing war between Iran and the United States. The West fears that Iran is trying to acquire nuclear weapons.
