The USA and President Donald Trump's decision to shut down the aid agency USAID can lead to millions of additional deaths from AIDS, warns the UN program Unaids.
I must sound the alarm to make it clear that this is a major part (of the financing of AIDS aid). If it disappears, people will die, says Winnie Byanyima, head of Unaids, which works globally with efforts against HIV/AIDS.
The USA's decision also means a 90-day suspension of all work on the USA's emergency plan for HIV and AIDS (Pepfar), but the Trump administration has announced that exceptions apply for medication within the program.
More than 20 million people, most of them in Africa, receive antiretroviral medication through Pepfar.
