According to the report, long-range weapons in the form of missiles and drones are the main cause of civilian casualties. Ukraine has recently raised the alarm that it lacks defences against ballistic missiles aimed at cities.
For the first half of this year, the UN counts 1,396 confirmed civilian deaths – more than twice as many as in 2024.
According to Russian data, the number of civilian casualties is also rising there. 250 civilians have reportedly been killed in Russia this year.
It also means that military losses are much higher. Ukraine claims to be “eliminating” over 1,000 Russian soldiers every day, meaning that they are killed or injured so badly that they will not be able to return to active duty.
