89 civilians have been killed in a series of attacks carried out by Islamist armed groups in Congo-Kinshasa over the past week, including women in a maternity ward, the UN says.

The IS-backed militia group ADF has carried out "particularly deadly" attacks between November 13 and 19, in several locations around the Lubero area in North Kivu, the UN mission Monusco wrote in a statement.

"In the Byambwe area, 60 kilometers west of Lubero, at least 17 civilians were killed - among them women being treated in the maternity ward," the statement said.

“During the attack, four wards housing patients were set on fire.”

Several armed groups are active in the area, including the Rwandan-backed anti-government M23, which took control of large areas in the provinces of North and South Kivu at the beginning of the year.

According to Monusco, other cities have also "suffered serious abuses, including kidnappings, looting of medical supplies, setting homes on fire and destroying property".
