Israel's military forces will remain in the refugee camps on the occupied West Bank during the coming year, announced the country's Defense Minister Israel Katz on Sunday. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been driven from their homes in the area.

I am seriously concerned about the increasing violence on the occupied West Bank from Israeli settlers, and other violations, as well as the calls for annexation, says Guterres before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.

On Sunday, Israel's military also announced that tanks had been deployed in Jenin. It is the first time in 20 years that tanks have been used on the West Bank.

The UN chief also emphasizes the importance of continuing the ceasefire in the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

We are witnessing an uncertain ceasefire. We must at all costs avoid a resumption of hostilities. The people of Gaza have already suffered too much, says Guterres.

The violence on the West Bank has increased sharply during the war between Israel and the terrorist-listed Hamas, which began after Hamas' deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
