In a social media post, OHCHR wrote that the racist comments were "abominable and show that Black female athletes are particularly vulnerable to hatred and racist attacks."

OHCHR wrote that "players, coaches and sports administrators must stand up for those who are subjected to such attacks."

Earlier this week, two-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 4 Coco Gauff said the volume of racist comments and messages she had received in just a few hours after her match against Chinese teenager Sun Xinran at the China Open in Beijing was "absolutely insane."

Two days later, Gauff lost to Belgian Elise Mertens and was eliminated from the WTA tournament. Afterwards, she said she was exhausted and tired from all the derogatory comments.

"It's been draining, I'm not going to lie," Gauff said, adding that she was affected by what people wrote about her online.
