In a statement on Monday, UN Human Rights Commissioner Türk made harsh remarks about the situation in the Latin American country after former totalitarian president Nicolás Maduro was abducted by US forces.
Türk notes that "structural and systematic concerns about Venezuela's human rights remain."
Prisoners who were supposed to be included in a recently passed amnesty law remain in detention; several have also not been brought to trial, Türk stated before the UN Human Rights Council.
Türk also warned that the state of emergency in the country could be exploited by the government in Caracas.
