Every ten minutes last year, a woman somewhere in the world was killed by someone close to her, the UN said in a report. Around 50,000 women and girls were killed by a partner or family member in 2024.

According to the report, 60 percent of all women murdered around the world were killed by either a partner or a relative. In comparison, 11 percent of men were killed by someone close to them.

The overall number of women killed by someone close to them is slightly lower than the number reported from 2023, but does not indicate a decline, according to the report. This is largely due to differences in the data between different countries.

“The home continues to be the most dangerous place for women and girls in terms of the risk of murder,” according to the report.

There are cases from all parts of the world, but last year the most occurred in Africa, where 22,000 cases were reported.
