The UK's Deputy UN Ambassador James Kariuki recently stated in the UN Security Council that Gaza has become the deadliest place in the world for children. However, the British, France, and several other countries have also highlighted in the UN the death and suffering of Israeli children in connection with Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, when children were also taken hostage by Hamas.
According to the UN agency Ocha, a third of all fatalities in Gaza are children, based on statistics from the Hamas-controlled health authority.
Nearly 19,000 children have also been hospitalized due to acute malnutrition between August and November last year, according to the UN's Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, citing figures from Unicef.
Thousands of children have become orphaned or separated from their parents during the war. 650,000 school-age children have not attended school, and the entire education system needs to be rebuilt due to the extensive destruction in Gaza, according to Yasmine Sherif, head of the UN fund Education Cannot Wait.
