The announcement comes after the IMO on Thursday temporarily suspended its efforts to assist around 600 ships estimated to be stuck in the waters around the strait.

The reason for the pause was an attack on a Singapore-flagged ship that was passing through the Gulf of Oman on Thursday. According to US media, Iranian forces were behind the shelling.

Many of the ships now transiting the vital waterway do so at the urging of the IMO and Oman through a corridor along the Omani coast. But Iran's Revolutionary Guard has warned that these transits are happening without Tehran's permission and that the ships could therefore be stopped.
