Ukrainians evacuated from Oleshky arrive in Belarus as local ceasefire takes effect

Ukrainians evacuated from the war-torn town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine have arrived in Belarus.

Representatives of both Russia and Ukraine have previously confirmed that anyone who wants to can be evacuated to either country.

According to Ukrainian politician David Arakhamia, four planes carrying evacuees arrived in the Belarusian city of Gomel on Saturday morning, and the evacuees will be on Ukrainian territory “within a few hours.”

A local ceasefire in Oleshky - first announced by US First Lady Melania Trump - came into effect on Tuesday.

The city was captured by Russian forces in 2022, and residents have long lacked food, clean water and medicine.
