The Ukrainian journalist and human rights activist Maksym Butkevytj is awarded this year's Václav Havel Prize for Human Rights by the Council of Europe.

Butkevych, one of the founders of the human rights center Zmina and the radio channel Hromadske, has fought as a volunteer in the Ukrainian army and also been imprisoned as a prisoner of war in Russia, before he was released in a prisoner exchange last autumn.

– Your voice can be silenced, but your testimony is heard clearly and distinctly, said Theodoros Rousopoulos, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, at a ceremony on Monday.

The Havel Prize has been awarded since 2013.
