The death toll is rising after Ukraine's attack on the factory, which is located just outside the town of Dorogobuzh, about 290 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Unconfirmed images on social media purportedly showed the factory in flames early Wednesday, with smoke rising into the sky.
“The enemy attacked PJSC Dorogobuzh, a civilian plant that produces nitrogen fertilizers,” writes Smolensk Region Governor Vasily Anokhin on Telegram.
Meanwhile, Russian airstrikes against Ukraine continue. According to the Kyiv Independent, local authorities say at least five people have been killed and eighteen injured by Russian drones and artillery in the past 24 hours.
