The attack early Tuesday was confirmed by both Russia and Ukraine and was described as retaliation for major Russian attacks on the neighboring country the day before, which killed at least 11 people and damaged a nearly 1,000-year-old monastery in Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media that the Moscow region is now experiencing Kyiv's "long-range capabilities." He said the attack is a response to Russia's "engaging in a war that must end," and posted a video of the attack on the oil facility.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said about 60 Ukrainian drones had been shot down, according to the state news agency Tass. The attack on the oil refinery reportedly caused a fire but no injuries.
