The sculpture was evacuated in 2024 from Pokrovsk, Donbas, to escape Russian occupation, reports the BBC.

"We have a destroyed city that no longer exists. I hope the message is clear and that everyone who visits the biennial understands it," the artist tells the BBC.

The relocated concrete deer can be seen as a symbol for all evacuated Ukrainians.

Pokrovsk is now an occupied city.

"Many people died there. But we saved this artifact. The question is how many artifacts are not saved in the war? How many other kinds of heritage have been destroyed?" the artist asks rhetorically.
