The decision to seize the ship was made after a request for legal assistance was received from another country, where, according to the application, a preliminary investigation into a suspected crime is underway, the Swedish Prosecution Authority wrote in a press release on Wednesday.
Which country had made the request was not known, but the press service of the Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office now confirms to P4 Malmöhus that it was Ukraine.
The Caffa was boarded in early March. The Coast Guard later stated that the ship had been sailing under a false flag and was on Ukraine's sanctions list, "where information indicates that it was transporting grain stolen from Ukraine."
