Koretsky has long held leading roles at the energy companies Ukrnafta and Naftogaz. Zelenskyy has said that energy security is perhaps the most important issue in Ukraine ahead of the coming winter. Russia's offensive war in recent winters has increasingly targeted the energy system.
Koretsky takes over from Yulia Svyrydenko, who has been prime minister for just a year. The change is part of a larger cabinet reshuffle. Mykhailo Fedorov has resigned as defence minister, despite receiving much of the credit for the drone investments that are currently yielding successes on the battlefield.
Fedorov is expected to be replaced by Ihor Klymenko, who until now was minister of internal affairs.
