There are no longer any distance restrictions for weapons fired from Ukraine – not for British or French or from us or from the USA, said Merz in a TV interview on Monday.
The Christian Democrat Merz and Germany's new coalition government have thus made a complete turnaround on the restrictions on how far Ukraine is allowed to fire donated rockets.
This means that Ukraine can, for example, defend itself by attacking military targets in Russia. With a few exceptions, Ukraine could not do that until very recently. Now they can do it, said Merz.
The USA's former President Joe Biden decided in 2024 that Ukraine could use American long-distance rockets of the type ATACMS against targets within Russia. The United Kingdom also made a similar decision on rockets of the type Storm Shadow.
The Kremlin responded to Merz's announcement that the decision was "dangerous".
If these decisions have really been made, then they go completely against our goal, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
