Ukraine has delivered, now it's up to the EU to deliver, says the EU Council President António Costa after Wednesday's talks at the informal summit in Copenhagen.
The EU is closer to its new sanctions package against Russia and the union will increase its military aid to Ukraine. The European leaders have agreed to move forward with several issues that will help Ukraine in the war against Russia.
Ukraine is our security guarantee for peace in Europe, says Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the press conference.
We will build a Europe so strong that war is not an alternative.
The Commission's proposal – that Ukraine should be able to take interest-free loans from the Russian assets that are frozen in the EU – has also received a positive response.
Money to Ukraine is an investment in security for the EU and it is only fair that Russia pays for the destruction they cause in Ukraine, says Frederiksen.
The leaders are also almost unanimously backing Ukraine's continued EU application, she says.
All countries, with one exception, confirm their support for Ukraine in the process of getting into the EU.
The exception is Hungary and its Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who earlier in the day said that "membership means that war will enter the EU".
Belgium's Prime Minister Bart De Wewer has also warned of "a number of legal and technical problems" for the EU if the Russian assets are to be used.
