Kovalskyj has until now been the chief prosecutor in the Khmelnytskyi region, writes The Kyiv Independent.
The appointment comes after former Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko resigned last week amid corruption allegations. According to the two anti-corruption units Nabu and Sapo, one of Kravchenko's subordinates led a network that laundered money from phone scams.
Ukraine is currently being shaken by extensive corruption scandals, in which several close associates of President Zelenskyy have been identified and forced to resign.
