The exchange constituted the final phase of the repatriation agreement that the countries concluded during the peace talks in Turkish Istanbul at the beginning of June. Ukraine and Russia then agreed to return several thousand dead soldiers.
During the past week, more than 6,000 bodies – mostly soldiers – have been returned to Ukraine, according to the country's Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov on Facebook. A large number of living prisoners of war have also been able to return home.
Moscow, in turn, has received a total of 78 dead soldiers from Ukraine in the latest exchanges.
The exchange of prisoners of war and the fallen was the only actual result of the hyped Istanbul talks between Ukraine and Russia.
