Just a year after it was launched, the “one in, one out” pilot project, which meant migrants arriving in the UK in small boats could be sent back to France, is now being scrapped.
The project came into effect in August last year and is due to expire on Wednesday. It will not be extended, the UK Home Office said in a statement.
The program "is no longer processing any new cases," the department writes.
Under the agreement, Britain would in return accept an equal number of asylum seekers from France, provided they had not attempted to cross the Channel before and passed British security checks.
