This is what the country's prime minister, Keir Starmer, said during a press conference.
TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram are among the apps that may be affected, the BBC reports.
"Social media is making children unhappy," Starmer said, according to the television channel.
He hopes the law will be passed before Christmas and come into effect early next year.
At the same time, Starmer said a ban is not something he "takes lightly" because social media has also had positive effects for young people.
Starmer added that the government must still "harness the power of technology to build a stronger and fairer Britain."
