The weather agency, roughly equivalent to SMHI in Sweden, draws its conclusions in its annual report, State of the UK Climate. According to the report, Europe can now be considered to have a completely new climate, both year-round, seasonally, monthly and day by day.
For example, the number of days with temperatures above 30 degrees and nights with temperatures above 18 degrees has more than quadrupled in London over the past ten years compared with 1961-1990. And the hottest day of the year is now, on average, 4.5 degrees above the 20th-century period.
This shows that the climate changes that our dependence on fossil fuels is leading to are no longer just “global averages or projections decades ahead,” comments Liz Bentley, head of the RMS (Royal Meteorological Society).
"It's something that people in the UK are noticing through the weather we're living in, and we've seen it play out in recent weeks," she said, according to the PA news agency.
Like many other parts of Europe, the UK has recently experienced several heatwaves, with both May and June setting new UK monthly records for high temperatures.
