The statement comes shortly after Starmer convened the country's ministers to an unusual cabinet meeting to discuss the situation in Gaza.

During the meeting, Starmer stated that the recognition will take place before the UN General Assembly "if the Israeli government does not take concrete actions to put an end to the terrible situation in Gaza".

He also demands that Israel "clarify that there will be no annexation of the West Bank and commit to a long-term peace process that leads to a two-state solution".

Starmer says that Hamas must release the hostages and agree to a ceasefire as well as "accept that they will not have any role in the governance of Gaza and agree to be disarmed".

In a statement on X, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that "Starmer rewards Hamas' monstrous terrorism and punishes its victims".

"A jihadist state on Israel's border today will threaten the United Kingdom tomorrow. Leniency towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will fail for you too. It will not happen," Netanyahu continues.

Last week, France's President Emmanuel Macron announced that the country had made the decision to officially recognize Palestine as a state. The announcement came in connection with a meeting between Starmer and Macron.

Starmer says in a TV speech that he "has always said that we will recognize a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process at a time that gives the greatest possible effect for a two-state solution".
