The 42-year-old man was born in Egypt and is resident in south-west London. He is believed to be the first person from the United Kingdom to be convicted of such a crime, according to BBC.

The human trafficking, with fishing boats that have traveled from North Africa to Italy, took place between October and June 2023. The United Kingdom's national police authority) began tracking the man after tips from Italian security authorities.

They found that he had been involved in the smuggling of nearly 3,800 men, women, and children, often in overcrowded fishing boats. He has also instructed a colleague to kill and throw people into the water, if they were caught with mobile phones on them, according to NCA.
