The facility, Sizewell C, is to be built in Suffolk on the eastern coast of the United Kingdom. The cost is estimated at £14.2 billion and the facility is expected to be able to deliver electricity to six million households when it is completed in the 2030s.

The stated aim is to make the country less dependent on insecure, foreign fossil fuel sources.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer says that previous governments have ducked and delayed investments in new nuclear power.

He points out that Sizewell C would increase the country's security policy independence.

And that means we can control prices in a way that we have not been able to in recent years, which has meant very high prices for businesses, for households and for families, says Starmer.

The construction is expected to create around 10,000 new job opportunities and the now announced sum is to be added to the £3–7 billion that the state has already invested in the project.
