UK blocks export of Rembrandt portrait valued at about SEK 900 million

The Dutch artist's painting was sold privately last year through Christie's for just over 900 million kronor.

However, Britain's culture minister can impose a temporary export ban on works of art classified as "national treasures." The 1657 painting is the most expensive work of art ever to receive that status.

However, the export ban only applies until December 26. The hope is that British museums or other suitable buyers will use the time to try to raise the money needed to purchase the work.
