David Owori was the captain of SC Villa and one of Uganda's most famous footballers, the BBC writes.
According to the broadcaster, police believe Owori was attacked with bricks by robbers near his home.
"David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and a source of inspiration for an entire generation," the Uganda Football Association wrote in a statement.
Uganda's parliament held a minute's silence on Wednesday and also called for a swift investigation into the incident, the BBC writes.
David Owori played one match for Swedish club Utsikten in 2022.
