A rarely seen heat wave has settled over the United Arab Emirates, which has never before measured such high May temperatures as this year.

And it was hottest on Friday, when the thermometer reached 50.4 degrees in an area in Abu Dhabi. In addition to the heat, it is also very humid in the region, with an air humidity of nearly 80 percent.

The hot May month follows a record warm April, where the average temperature was 42.6 degrees.

The nation's meteorological institute urges residents to stay in the shade, drink plenty of water, dress coolly and think about sun protection.
