U21 men overwhelmed - have to hope for help

It was a Swedish U21 national team with one thing in sight: victory and a secured playoff spot to the European Championship. Instead, it became a defeat with 0-3 against the Netherlands after a nightmare start – and Blågult must put their hopes on North Macedonia.

The Netherlands, unbeaten in the European Championship qualifying round and already group winners, were the opponents Sweden faced on Monday evening.

To secure a second place in the group, which means a playoff spot for the European Championship in Slovakia 2025, Sweden needed a win – but that didn't happen.

As early as one and a half minutes in, the Netherlands took the lead after a pattern attack, and Sweden's uphill battle was a fact. It didn't get any easier when the Netherlands extended their lead to 2–0 a quarter of an hour later.

In the end, it was 3–0 to the Netherlands.

The loss means that Sweden has to rely on North Macedonia, who face Georgia on Tuesday. The Georgians hold third place in the group ahead of the final match, one point behind Sweden.

The group winners and the three best runners-up qualify for the European Championship finals. The remaining six group runners-up will play in the playoffs.
