Champi did not hit all of Taiwan, but it has still had a major impact on many residents.
280,000 households were left without power, and one person died after being swept away by waves whipped up by the storm. Thousands of people have been evacuated, and trees and power lines have been brought down.
The typhoon is expected to weaken as it moves towards Japan and China. In Shanghai, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, and some train lines have been suspended ahead of Champi's arrival.
Dozens of flights have been canceled in the region, including in Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture.
