Bavi, described as the worst typhoon to hit the region in decades, made landfall in eastern China's Zhejiang province late Saturday night with winds of up to 40 meters per second, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The typhoon is expected to move further northwest while weakening.
Before reaching China, Bavi ravaged northern Taiwan and southern Japan with strong winds, torrential rain and waves up to 12 metres high. Thousands of people were without power on Saturday morning in the southern prefecture of Okinawa.
More than 250 flights have been cancelled in the region, NHK reports. In Taiwan, around 80 people have been injured in accidents caused by the storm.
